Brief bio – facts only

Silvana Roiter is a strategic job hopper and serial entrepreneur.  During her work life that spans more than ten years, she has experienced thirteen jobs and three careers in six industries across three continents.  With her insight and achievements, she owns the space of self-made careers.

By deliberately taking ownership of her career, this passionate and energetic woman continues to create choices for herself.  Among them, taking time off to write full time.  Silvana now works as the commercial director of a leading Latin American original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of medical devices – the only local OEM in the region.

Indeed she’s one to keep an eye on for years to come.

Long bio – straight from me

After I received an almost negligible pay raise early on in my career, I realized that it was up to me to make things happen and to create choices for myself.  Leveraging what I knew about setting up and running businesses across three continents, I decided to run my career like a business. I proceeded to set goals, develop a strategic plan and implement it.  I knew that to make things happen I needed a solid structure, otherwise I’d be leaving myself at the mercy of others.

What makes me a strategic job hopper?

In a decade I’ve had 12 jobs – all of which I’ve voluntarily resigned from while being able to maintain positive relationships with my ex bosses and colleagues.  Particularly in the last 5 years, by merely switching jobs, I managed to increase my pay three times by over 30% each time.  That’s a raise every 14 months!   Had I stayed put in the same job, I would have likely received the average annual Australian pay raise of 4.5% – not acceptable in my book.  During that same period, I rose up the ranks from working as a marketing coordinator to working as a national manager – and then earning the position of the youngest member of the executive team of a multimillion dollar start-up company in Sydney, Australia.

What makes me a serial entrepreneur?

Growing up as part of a family of enterprise builders in Barranquilla, Colombia, I was born with risk running through my veins.  My first business venture was a mango stall at the side of the road when I was 5 years old.  In the mango business I honed my sales skills and made quite a bit of spending money (it also helped that Grandma supplied the mangos for free!)  This exposure to business at an early age provided me with the ability to fund and run more sophisticated businesses, including a channel development venture in the Asia Pacific region in the software industry and a trading company in Australia.

All of this combined with a bilingual, multicultural education, a pursuit of multiple careers (3 and counting), and experience in a wide variety of roles, industries and companies across three continents has led me to the conclusion that to succeed on one’s terms, one must claim ownership over their career.

The purpose of this blog is to share with you my experience and knowledge so that you too grab your worklife by the reigns and get what you want from work.
